The children's eyewear webshop of Europe

As with most successful companies, Junior & Junior was born from frustration. Co-founder Marieke Kolleman’s business partner has three kids, 2 of which have glasses.

Fashionable & sturdy frames

For a fair price

For a good pair of glasses they had to travel all the way to another city, where they could find decent glasses, but had to pay €500,-. The alternative was a poor quality set of glasses from Elsa, Hello Kitty or Superman,” according to Marieke. There had to be a different, better and cheaper way. And so in the spring of 2021, Junior & Junior, Europe’s first online children’s eyewear store debuted on the eyewear scene. With fashionable, sturdy frames for a fair price. And since the children’s eyewear market is still in its infancy and more and more kids need glasses, there are many possibilities to grow, both locally and internationally.

Code supports Junior & Junior with that growth. Last year we helped them build their Shopify webshop, built two custom features and set up their email marketing flows in Klaviyo. This year we’re exploring cross-border ecommerce with the bèta version of Shopify Markets. And next year? We don’t know yet, but we’re super excited to help Junior & Junior realize their ambition of becoming “the Jonas Paul of Europe”.

You don’t have to be developer to run your webshop

Marieke and her business partner chose Shopify because the platform provides them with many options and control. For instance, Shopify allows her to manage the webshop herself: “You can do everything yourself. From pricing to how the pages are built and from invoices to SEO content,

there are modules for everything. You don’t even have to be a developer!” Marieke says happily. Code guides strategic e-commerce decisions and advises which smart apps can take care of time-consuming jobs, so she has her hands free to run the business.

Coole custom features

The added value of Code being a Shopify expert was neatly showcased in the design and implementation of the custom features on the Junior & Junior platform: the Try Me Box and the Lens Configurator.

Try Me Box

The revolutionary Try Me Box allows customers to order 4 pairs of glasses to try on at home. The custom features that Code added made eyewear shopping for and with your child fun and easy. And because the Try Me Box is connected to the platform, it has some useful features, like a QR code that leads people to a page where they can measure their pupil distance or sends them directly to the product page where they can shop the pair they chose from the box.

Lens Configurator

After picking a frame from the Try Me Box, you can order the glasses with prescription lenses online. To do this, Junior & Junior needs some information from the prescription, which they obtain from the Lens Configurator. In this module, customers fill out their prescription, which Junior & Junior then uses to cut the lenses to the right prescription and size. Within a few days, the glasses arrive on the customer’s doorstep.

Klaviyo & Shopify: a great team

Because Junior & Junior strongly believes in the power of good marketing in the e-commerce arena, they needed an email-marketing tool. They considered MailChimp but swiftly learned that Shopify and Klaviyo worked much better together. Marieke wrote the flows herself and Code set them up for her in Klaviyo. Nowadays, Marieke takes care of her own Klaviyo proceedings: “A brilliant system. It’s filled with cool nerdy stuff!”

Double the turnover

Marieke’s goal for this year is to double the company’s turnover. Even though they still have a little ways to go, the eyewear webshop attracts around 10,000 visitors each month, has an AOV (average order value) of €190 and has a growing number of recurring customers. That sounds like a good start to a promising future.

Entering the European market with Shopify Markets

Now that Junior & Junior is established in the Netherlands, Marieke and her business partner are looking to expand to other countries within Europe. They started in Belgium and their webshop has also been translated to German and English to serve Germany, the Nordics and the UK. For this, Code uses Shopify Markets. This will help Marieke achieve her dream of “becoming the top-of-mind online children’s eyewear store of Europe”.
